For over 23 years, PV Shelter has successfully helped homeless families, women, and children by providing emergency and transitional housing units and services. Thanks to the dedicated work of many people, including our founders (Sister Marie Veronica Wagner and Sister Susan Olson) and many other wonderful supporters, we have established our agency as a solid and stable community asset effectively assisting the homeless of our community.
The purpose of our project is two-fold: renovate the housing units and revitalize the agency infrastructure. Foremost is the need to perform critical maintenance. While we were able to recently renovate our Marin units with the help of the City of Watsonville, our older units remain in need of renovation.
The PV Shelter Board of Directors had previously targeted a revitalization effort as an essential part of our Five-Year Strategic Plan. Efforts to further define the plan were underway when we experienced the unfortunate passing of Sister Marie Veronica Wagner. Sister Marie was a driving force in the establishment of PV Shelter. What better way to give honor to Sister Marie than to revitalize the project that was so close to her heart?
The fundraising target for this project is $400,000; we intend to raise the funds from a combination of grants, corporate, and major donor support. The bulk of the maintenance needs are composed of painting, decking, stairways, appliance replacement, cabinets, fixtures, flooring, fencing, and other areas that are sadly in need of attention. We hope to complete the fundraising portion by the summer of 2007. Renovation work will be done as we receive funds, targeting areas where the need is greatest. Raised monies will help ensure that we are up to date on deferred maintenance with no foreseeable major maintenance needs for 3-5 years.
We would be more than happy to provide more details or take you on a tour of the facilities needing repair. If you are interesting in hearing more about the Project or would like to contribute to our efforts (money or in-kind services), you can contact our Executive Director, Mark Riley, at 728-5649.
